Question 1

What does a product manager do at a hyper-growth company?

Accepted Answer

At a hyper-growth company, a product manager typically owns the roadmap for one or more product areas, defines requirements based on customer research and data, and works closely with engineering and design to ship features. Unlike at large companies, PMs at scale-ups often have direct access to customers, significant influence over company strategy, and responsibility for outcomes rather than just outputs. The role demands comfort with ambiguity and the ability to make decisions quickly with incomplete information.

Question 2

What background do hyper-growth companies look for in product managers?

Accepted Answer

Most hyper-growth companies look for PMs with 3–7 years of product experience, strong analytical skills (SQL, data analysis), and a track record of shipping products that drove measurable business outcomes. Technical PMs with engineering backgrounds are particularly valued for infrastructure or developer-facing products. Some companies, especially in B2B SaaS, also value domain expertise — a PM with fintech experience has a significant advantage at a fintech scale-up.

Question 3

How is product management at a Series B company different from a large tech company?

Accepted Answer

At a Series B company, PMs typically have broader scope, less process overhead, and more direct impact on company direction. You will likely own a product area end-to-end rather than a narrow feature slice. The trade-off is less structure, fewer resources, and higher ambiguity. Career progression can be faster — a strong PM at a Series B can reach Director or VP level within 2–3 years — but the role requires more self-direction and comfort with building processes from scratch.
