Question 1

What people and HR roles are most in demand at hyper-growth companies?

Accepted Answer

Technical recruiters are consistently the most in-demand people role at hyper-growth companies — the ability to source, assess, and close strong engineering and ML candidates is a critical bottleneck for most scale-ups. HR business partners (HBPs) who can support rapid headcount growth while maintaining culture and compliance are also in high demand at Series C and beyond. People operations managers who can build scalable HR processes and systems (HRIS implementation, compensation frameworks, onboarding programmes) are needed as companies grow past 100 employees.

Question 2

What is the difference between HR and people operations at a tech company?

Accepted Answer

Traditional HR focuses on compliance, employment law, and administrative processes. People operations (often called 'People Ops') at tech companies takes a more strategic, employee-experience-oriented approach — it encompasses everything from recruiting and onboarding to culture programmes, performance management, and organisational design. Most hyper-growth companies use the 'People' or 'People Ops' framing to signal a more progressive, employee-centric approach to the function.

Question 3

What HRIS and recruiting tools do hyper-growth companies use?

Accepted Answer

Greenhouse is the most common applicant tracking system (ATS) at Series B and C companies, followed by Lever and Ashby (increasingly popular at newer companies). For HRIS, Rippling, BambooHR, and Workday (at larger scale-ups) are common. LinkedIn Recruiter is the primary sourcing tool for most technical recruiting teams. Compensation benchmarking tools like Radford (Aon), Levels.fyi data, and Carta for equity management are standard at well-funded companies.
