Question 1

What marketing roles are most in demand at hyper-growth companies?

Accepted Answer

Product marketing managers (PMMs) are consistently among the most in-demand marketing roles at hyper-growth companies — they sit at the intersection of product, sales, and marketing, owning positioning, messaging, and go-to-market strategy. Demand generation managers who can build and optimise paid and organic pipeline are also highly sought after. Growth marketers with experience in product-led growth (PLG) motions are particularly valued at developer-focused and SaaS companies.

Question 2

What is product marketing and why is it important at a scale-up?

Accepted Answer

Product marketing is the function responsible for bringing a product to market — defining the target customer, crafting the value proposition, enabling the sales team with messaging and materials, and driving launch campaigns. At a hyper-growth company, a strong PMM is critical because the product is evolving rapidly and the market positioning needs to keep pace. PMMs at scale-ups often have more influence over product roadmap decisions than at large companies, as they own the customer and competitive intelligence that informs what gets built.

Question 3

Do hyper-growth companies hire marketers without a tech background?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though the bar varies by role. Brand, communications, and content roles are accessible to marketers from non-tech backgrounds who can demonstrate strong storytelling and an ability to learn technical subject matter quickly. Demand generation and growth roles increasingly require comfort with marketing automation tools (HubSpot, Marketo), analytics platforms (GA4, Mixpanel), and basic data analysis. Product marketing roles at technical companies (developer tools, infrastructure) typically require either a technical background or deep experience marketing to technical audiences.
