Question 1

What ML and AI roles are most in demand at hyper-growth companies?

Accepted Answer

The highest-demand ML roles at hyper-growth companies are ML engineers who can take models from research to production, LLM engineers with experience fine-tuning and deploying large language models, and applied research scientists working on novel architectures. Data scientists with strong statistical foundations and experience with model evaluation are also consistently in demand. Companies at the frontier of AI (Anthropic, Cohere, Mistral, DeepMind) additionally hire research scientists with PhD-level expertise.

Question 2

Do I need a PhD to get an ML or AI job at a hyper-growth company?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Research scientist roles at frontier AI labs typically require a PhD or equivalent research experience. However, ML engineer, applied ML, and LLM engineer roles at most hyper-growth companies prioritise demonstrated ability to ship models in production — strong GitHub portfolios, Kaggle rankings, or experience with PyTorch/JAX/TensorFlow in real systems often outweigh formal credentials for engineering-track positions.

Question 3

What programming languages and frameworks do ML roles at hyper-growth companies use?

Accepted Answer

Python is the universal language for ML work. The most common frameworks are PyTorch (dominant at research-oriented companies), TensorFlow/Keras (more common at larger enterprises), and JAX (increasingly common at frontier labs). For production ML systems, experience with MLflow, Ray, Kubeflow, or similar MLOps tooling is increasingly expected. Rust and C++ experience is valued for performance-critical inference work.
