Question 1

What executive roles are most commonly available at hyper-growth companies?

Accepted Answer

The most frequently posted executive roles at hyper-growth companies are VP of Engineering, VP of Product, VP of Sales, and Head of Data or Chief Data Officer. CTO and CPO roles are less frequent but represent significant opportunities for senior technical leaders. Director-level roles (Director of Engineering, Director of Product, Director of Marketing) are the most common entry point into executive-track positions at scale-ups, offering a path to VP and C-suite as the company grows.

Question 2

What does a VP of Engineering role look like at a Series C company?

Accepted Answer

At a Series C company (typically 50–200 engineers), a VP of Engineering is responsible for the entire engineering organisation — hiring and developing engineering managers and senior engineers, setting technical standards and processes, managing the engineering roadmap in partnership with product, and representing engineering at the executive level. The role requires a balance of technical credibility (to earn the respect of senior engineers) and organisational leadership (to build and scale the team). Most Series C VPs of Engineering manage 3–8 engineering managers and 30–150 engineers.

Question 3

How does executive compensation at hyper-growth companies compare to large tech companies?

Accepted Answer

Executive base salaries at hyper-growth companies are typically 70–90% of equivalent roles at FAANG. The significant differentiator is equity: VP and C-suite hires at Series B–D companies typically receive 0.1–1.0% equity stakes (depending on role, stage, and company valuation), which can represent substantial value at exit. Total compensation including equity upside can significantly exceed FAANG packages for executives who join at the right stage. Most hyper-growth companies also offer meaningful autonomy and the opportunity to build something from scratch — a non-financial benefit that many executives value highly.
