Question 1

What design tools do hyper-growth companies use?

Accepted Answer

Figma is the near-universal standard for product and UI design at hyper-growth companies, having largely replaced Sketch. For prototyping, Figma's built-in prototyping is common, with Framer used for higher-fidelity interactive prototypes. Design systems are typically built and maintained in Figma. For brand and marketing design, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop) remains common. UX researchers typically use Maze, UserTesting, or Dovetail for research synthesis.

Question 2

What does a product designer do at a hyper-growth company?

Accepted Answer

A product designer at a hyper-growth company typically owns the end-to-end design of one or more product areas — from initial user research and problem definition through wireframing, prototyping, and final visual design to handoff with engineering. Unlike at large companies where design is often split into specialist roles, product designers at scale-ups are expected to be generalists who can move fluidly between strategy, UX, and visual craft. Many also contribute to the design system and mentor junior designers.

Question 3

Is a design degree required for design roles at hyper-growth companies?

Accepted Answer

No. Most hyper-growth companies evaluate designers primarily on portfolio quality — the strength of your case studies, the clarity of your design thinking, and the craft of your visual work. Bootcamp graduates, self-taught designers, and those who transitioned from adjacent fields (engineering, psychology, visual arts) are regularly hired at scale-ups. A strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design work, with clear articulation of the problem, process, and outcome, is the primary hiring signal.
