Question 1

What is the difference between a data analyst and an analytics engineer at a hyper-growth company?

Accepted Answer

A data analyst typically focuses on querying existing data to answer business questions, building dashboards, and communicating insights to stakeholders. An analytics engineer sits between data engineering and analysis — they build and maintain the data models (typically in dbt) that analysts and business users query. Analytics engineering is a newer, higher-demand role that requires stronger SQL and software engineering skills than traditional data analysis.

Question 2

What tools and skills do data roles at hyper-growth companies require?

Accepted Answer

SQL is the universal baseline for all data roles. Data engineers typically work with Python, Spark, Airflow or Prefect, and cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift). Analytics engineers use dbt as their primary tool alongside SQL. Data analysts are expected to know SQL deeply and at least one BI tool (Looker, Tableau, or Metabase). Python for statistical analysis (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn) is increasingly expected for senior analyst roles.

Question 3

How important is data work at a Series B or C company?

Accepted Answer

At Series B and C, data work becomes critical — these are the stages where companies shift from intuition-driven to data-driven decision-making. The first data hire at a scale-up typically has enormous scope: building the data stack from scratch, defining metrics, and enabling the entire company to make better decisions. This makes early data roles at hyper-growth companies both high-impact and high-visibility, with direct access to leadership and the ability to shape how the company thinks about its numbers.
